Position Dairy Trainee Farm Manager - Bristol Veterinary School | Location Langford, Bristol | No. Required 1 | Period Full-time, permanent |
The Role
Wyndurst Farm milks 200 high yielding pedigree holsteins through a 24-24 delaval herringbone 3x a day, with night milking covered by agency milkers. Cows are currently yielding 40 litres daily, are housed year round on sand cubicles. The herd currently runs at a 42% conception rate and a 29.9% pregnancy rate, with a breeding focus on longevity to complement the productivity. Wyndhurst is part of the University of Bristol's School of Veterinary Sciences, meaning it primarily serves as a teaching facility for undergradauate vet students. Research also plays an increasing role in the direction of the farm, with trials focusing around animal welfare and disease .
The day to day role would primarily involve:
- Integrating with the farm team to continue to ensure the health, welfare and productivity of the herd.
- Inclusion in the routine work with a mixture of milking, feeding calves and yard work.
- Potential TMR feeding to relieve the Farm Manager in the week when required. A rota would be constructed to circulate routine jobs between the team, allowing the opportunity to learn key elements of herd management/husbandry, without being fixed into one position. One key target of the business to address is flexibility for its staff to improve their quality of life.
- Involvement with some of the twice-weekly vet routine visits.
- Data inputting for Uniform herd management software.
- Routine maintenance and keeping the farm to a high standard.
Direct teaching involvement is limited compared to a college environment, with milking practicals weekly through the winter being the only teaching input from the farm team. However, with high student footfall, research involvement and students in attendance with all veterinary involvement, being an approachable member of the farm team is a key learning opportunity for students.
Key attributes for the role:
- Drive and enthusiasm for livestock production and high welfare standards
- Experience in milking and feeding calves
- Strong communication skills and willingness to interact with vet students.
- Attention to detail
- UK Driving Licence
What we can offer:
- With your enthusiasm, you will learn to manage livestock to a high standard.
- Training as required, depending on the candidate, with access to Velcourt's learning and development opportunites.
- 3 bedroom house on the farm.
- Good location south of Bristol.
The selected candidate will join the Velcourt Management Training Scheme which is a two-year programme in farm management where trainees undertake a combination of practical on-farm instruction, formal classroom-based tuition, and residential courses with a focus on personal development.
This role is not eligible for UK Visa Sponsorship. Successful applicants will need to have a pre-existing Right to Work in the UK in order to be offered an employment contract.
